THE STORY
BEHIND THE AWARD: The Tim Gullikson Spirit Award is presented yearly to a brain tumor patient,
caregiver, volunteer, corporation or benefactor, that embraces the
fighting spirit and positive attitude that Tim used to battle -- and
live with -- brain tumors, and in doing so, give hope to others. It
recognizes someone who has shown extraordinary and unique courage,
resourcefulness or ingenuity in battling the disease, or a person who
shows an extraordinary effort to help fulfill the goals of the
Foundation to assist brain tumor patients and their families as they
cope with the illness. Each year, the Foundation selects a
Spirit Award winner
to honor Tim Gullikson's memory and in
the fall of 2007, Chris was chosen as a national winner.
In November Chris received a phone call from
the Gullikson Foundation.
This is a foundation that does a ton of work on behalf of brain tumor
patients and their families. The phone call was to let Chris know that
he was a recipient of the Tim Gullikson Spirit Award! They hand
this prestigious award out to someone with a brain tumor yet still keeps
moving on with life in a spirit-filled way. It was Chris' honor to be
made aware that he had been recognized for continued pastoring of his church
and never giving into the illness.
The Foundation flew Chris, his mom, and dad down to Naples, Florida in
December for one of their big yearly brain tumor fundraisers called 'Swingtime'.
This was a HUGE tennis exhibition event along with a golf PRO-AM.
There were tennis superstars AND TV-stars! Chris got to watch some
awesome tennis courtside, had an amazing dinner at the Ritz-Carlton in
Naples, and was honored by a wonderful group of people including
Tim's family who really understands this disease as it took him at
the young age of 44. Chris spent time with incredible people
talking not just about what it means to live with a brain tumor, but
also what it means to simply LIVE! There were so many people there
that just wanted to show their support and that alone was a wonderful
boost. To also be there in the midst of a brain tumor recurrence was God's perfect timing
(see Bio page for further info). Chris thanks Tom for hosting, Julie, Rosemary,
Megan, Christy, and Lori for great conversations, Michele for setting it
all up so pefectly, and Brett for keeping the whole night rolling!
SportsCenter misses you! All of you will forever have a
special home in Chris' heart.
